Everyone is capable of learning how to be handy. While this may seem intimidating to some people, we at Mayfield Village assure you that anybody can learn these skills. Here are a few simple and easy DIY projects that anyone can learn.
Replacing Deck Boards
If you already know how to use an electric drill, this DIY task will be a walk down easy street. If you’re not familiar with using an electric drill, then this is the perfect way to become acquainted with using one. For this easy home renovation project, all you’ll need is a hammer, an electric drill, drill bits, deck screws, replacement boards, and a mitre saw (preferably on a stand).
Don’t be put off by the inclusion of a saw for this project. You can always get a handy helper to lend you some aid. Or, if you want to expand your skill set, you can learn to use it yourself.
If your current deck boards are getting old, discoloured, or if you don’t want to maintain wooden boards, you can buy what’s known as composite deck boards. These boards never fade in colour, they’re slip resistant, and they can mimic the appearance of wood. All you need to do is remove the old boards via drill, cut the new boards to size, drill them down using deck screws, and you’re all set!
Wallpaper Your Space for a New Look
This simple DIY project is something that anyone can do, and it doesn’t require any power tools to accomplish. First, select the wallpaper that best suits the room in question. Then you want to prepare the surface by filling in any cracks, make sure it’s clean and free of moisture, then carefully measure the space to be covered, and put up some lining paper so that the wallpaper has a smooth surface to hang on.
You'll likely need to apply an adhesive to the liner before placing it on the wall. Visit your local hardware store to find the option that works best for you. For more information on this process, check out some videos online for professional tips and tricks.
Next, you'll want to place the wallpaper onto the wall surface. Use the recommended type and amount of adhesive, and apply it to your walls evenly, from the centre of the wall outward.
A Fresh Coat of Paint
This old standard is a time-honoured favourite, and a real cinch to complete. You can even get the whole family in on the fun! Start by selecting your favourite colour from your local paint or hardware store. Then you can purchase your brushes, paint trays, and rollers. Also, don’t forget to clean the walls and apply green painters tape along all the adjacent surfaces. Also make sure to prime the surface of the wall before painting, to ensure the old colour doesn’t affect the new colour.
Next, fill in the edges with a brush, then use a roller to paint to the primary wall space. Remember, many hands make for light work, so try to include the kids and your significant other in the painting, and create some lifelong memories.
Flower Power
Creating a flower or vegetable garden in your yard is another fun DIY project that the whole family can enjoy. All you’ll need are your gardening tools, seeds or pre-potted plants, and some nutrient-rich soil. Simply excavate the area, till the soil, plant your seeds, water regularly, and watch life grow before your very eyes.
Having a garden is a great chance to grow fresh vegetables like carrots or tomatoes. This DIY project is one of the simplest tasks to undertake and can reward you with fresh fruits and vegetables for years to come.
